LANDMARK SUPREME COURT DECISION On July 12, 2002, the Wisconsin Supreme Court resoundingly rebuffed a constitutional challenge to that states Fifth Standard, which is among the nations broadest treatment placement criteria. In State vs. Dennis H., 647 N.W.2d 851, the unanimous Court found that those meeting the Fifth Standard are in a condition that constitutes dangerousness under both the U.S. and Wisconsin Constitutions. But the Courts definition of what is dangerous fell soundly within the realm of what most would call need for treatment.
RESOURCE NAMI Wisconsin has prepared an online resource manual for family and friends on understanding and coping with mental illness. The manual is very comprehensive and includes a "hospitalization" section with a chapter on involuntary commitment, as well as chapters on voluntary hospitalization, probable cause hearing, final commitment hearing, after admission, leaving the hospital, and patient rights at the time of discharge.
PREVENTABLE TRAGEDIES The Preventable Tragedies database includes summaries of news articles of which an individual with a neurobiological brain disorder (usually untreated) is involved in a violent episode, either as a victim or perpetrator. Search for Wisconsin episodes by choosing WI in the drop down box.
