LETTER Hope for mental illness - My heart goes out to the families and friends of the slain police officers, the Athens Police Department, the Barksdale family and the entire community. From experience, I know that life will never be the same for any of you. These shootings brought the events of my husband's death on July 8, 1998, back as though it had just happened.

NEWS Shooting could happen 'here today' - "Our officers do have training. We have to execute mental pick-up orders almost on a daily basis," [Cullman County Sheriff Tyler] Roden said. "Dealing with the mentally ill is one of the largest challenges we face in law enforcement."
Cullman Times, January 4, 2004

RESOURCE  The Alabama Law Institute for the Alabama Probate Judges' Association prepared the Limestone County Courthouse's information page on the state involuntary commitment process. It is informative, accurate, and reader-friendly.

PREVENTABLE TRAGEDIES The Preventable Tragedies database includes summaries of news articles of which an individual with a neurobiological brain disorder (usually untreated) is involved in a violent episode, either as a victim or perpetrator. Search for Alabama episodes by choosing AL in the drop down box.
