Help Us Save

Lives in California

Laura Wilcox, 1981-2001

Eight years ago, our daughter, Laura, was at work at California's Nevada County Behavioral Health clinic.  A client appeared for a scheduled appointment. Without warning or provocation, he drew a handgun and shot Laura four times. When the rampage at the clinic and at a nearby restaurant ended, Laura and two others lay dead, and three were injured.

California passed Laura’s to help make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to another family.  Laura was at the clinic that day to help.

We’re asking for you help to bring Laura’s Law to your county and help save lives.

Making Laura ’s Law Available Throughout California

The 2008 goal of the California Treatment Advocacy Coalition (CTAC) is to make assisted outpatient treatment available in all Californian counties to help those who are rendered incapable of accessing obviously needed treatment by the symptoms of a severe mental illness like schizophrenia.

That means that it is up to each of us to urge the Board of Supervisors of our own county to adopt this valuable court-ordered community treatment mechanism.

Nevada County’s new AOT program proves that Laura’s Law can be adopted and that MHSA can pay for it.  That does not make getting AOT for a county easy, but it does put the program on an even playing field with all others.

AOT is an extremely effective tool to care for certain individuals and allows the sickest patients to get help before the point of immediate physical danger, removing them from the revolving door of repeated emergency room visits and jail that are so costly to counties.  CTAC will continue to work on the implementation of Laura’s Law to bring treatment to all of those in need in California.  It is the Board of Supervisors that decides whether not your county adopts Laura’s Law – please write to or visit your Supervisor.  The message is simple – Adopt Laura’s Law.
